The brief

Every Blue Sky Studio project begins with listening.

“We love our house, but this atrium in the middle is a big nothing. It should be the best room of all.”
The owners of Glen Springs Road

About the project

A dull, flat-planed central atrium re-drawn as the gallery at the heart of the home — brought alive with curves, daylight and a new staircase.

Some houses carry their unfinished spaces politely for years. Glen Springs Road had one — a large central atrium the owners passed through daily without ever quite arriving in. It asked to be more than a circulation room.

The redesign pushed back against the existing flat planes with a composition of soft curves, a reconfigured staircase, and a clerestory that pulls light deep into the center of the plan. What had been a hallway became a gallery; what had been unresolved was finally given a shape.

The atrium now reads as the principal room of the house — the first place you want to stand when you arrive, the quiet room the house had always wanted.
