The brief
Every Blue Sky Studio project begins with listening.
“Our front porch is crumbling, and we hate that tiny afterthought of a kitchen. This house could be so much more — we just can’t see how.”
About the project
A crumbling Hollywood hillside bungalow reimagined as a gracious, light-filled family home — oriented, finally, to its canyon views.
The owners of this classic hillside bungalow loved their neighborhood and their view — but the house had drifted out of step with how they actually lived. A dark, compartmentalized plan and a cramped kitchen left the best rooms pointed the wrong way, and the front porch was, literally, falling apart.
The redesign begins at the street with a quietly rebuilt entry and continues room by room through the heart of the house. Walls came down around the dining and living rooms to create a single, luminous great room with a generous staircase as its sculptural anchor. New steel-framed glazing replaced small punched windows so that the canyon view now pours into the house.
Upstairs, a former warren of small bedrooms and closets was recomposed as a private master suite with a dedicated media room. The rebuilt exterior — new siding, new windows, a proper porch — lets the home finally present itself with the confidence it had always deserved.
